The goal of the February 9, 2009, HESI webinar was to provide an up-to-date review of the published literature on genotoxicity testing of nanomaterials. Robert Landsiedel, MSc, PhD, DABT (BASF SE), described appropriate testing methods and the preparation of test materials. Steffen Loft, DMSc (University of Copenhagen) discussed in vivo / in vitro associations of oxidative stress-induced genotoxicity of nanomaterials. Raymond M. David, PhD, DABT (BASF Corporation; HESI Nanomaterial EHS Project Committee Chair) moderated the webinar.
As many as 75 scientists from government, academia, and industry participated, including those joining the webinar at hosted sites. Countries represented on the webinar included Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Notably, the US Food and Drug Administration hosted the webinar for multiple FDA participants at two locations.
The HESI Nanomaterial EHS Project Committee will develop a manuscript summarizing the webinar presentations and discussions for publication in a peer-reviewed, scientific journal.
