HESI Cardiac Safety Database Internship


About HESI: HESI is a nonprofit organization based in Washington, DC. HESI’s mission is to collaboratively identify and help to resolve global health and environmental challenges through the engagement of scientists from academia, government, industry, clinical practice, research institutes, and NGOs. The Cardiac Safety Committee is one of the groups within HESI that focuses to improve public health by reducing unanticipated cardiovascular-related adverse effects from drugs or chemicals and develop innovative approaches to support early detection and prediction as well as improved understanding of cardiovascular toxicology and pathobiology.


The Health and Environmental Sciences Institute (HESI) seeks an intern to conduct literature-based research in support of HESI’s collaborative efforts to enhance approaches to cardiovascular safety assessment with the development of a new, publicly accessible data resource. Specific Responsibilities will include conducting literature searches and collaborating with the Cardiac Safety Committee Senior Scientific Managers and Cardiac Compound Tool (CCT) Database Subteam members to identify compounds for inclusion in the database; compiling and stratifying information on compounds as provided; and attending teleconferences and local meetings as scheduled.

This internship offers an to opportunity to learn from and network with experts in the toxicology and safety pharmacology fields from academia, regulatory agencies and pharmaceutical companies. This position may also provide the opportunity to contribute to and gain authorship on one or more peer-reviewed publications.


Qualifications and Requirements: Intern candidates will have a bachelor’s degree in sciences (biology, chemistry or similar) and have recently graduated or are a candidate for an advanced science degree (Master’s or PhD graduate/candidates.) Experience conducting systematic literature searches using PubMed, Google Scholar or similar required. Knowledge of toxicology, pharmacology, drug safety assessment, and/or cardiovascular physiology a significant positive. Proficient computer skills necessary, including Microsoft Office Suite (Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.) Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Self-directed and able to work with limited supervision. Energetic and eager to tackle new projects and ideas.


Location: The internship will be based out of HESI’s offices in Washington, DC, 740 15th St NW, Suite 600, but may also require local travel during business hours. A temporary workspace and laptop will be provided.


Schedule and Compensation: The start date is negotiable, and the intern will be expected to work at least 20 hours per week for 12 weeks. Any extensions will be discussed prior to the end of initial term. A stipend of $5,000.00 USD is offered for this position.
