To fulfill our scientific mission, HESI adheres to a multi-sector operating model. We believe that when scientists from academia, government, foundations, health care, and industry are integrated into all levels of the organization’s activities, we produce impactful results. Scientists from multiple sectors share responsibility for identifying research topics, designing and leading studies and projects, and interpreting and applying results via our scientific committees.
Individual public sector scientists (e.g., from academia, research institutes and hospitals, government agencies, foundations, NGOs, etc.) may join HESI at the committee level or may be considered for election as a Trustee of the HESI Board. There are no direct costs for public participation, although in-kind contributions as described below are required. Trade associations are not eligible to join HESI.
Join existing committees. (There is no fee to join; the only requirement is relevant technical expertise.) Commitment requires active participation on conference calls and in meetings, as well as to providing ongoing, intellectual input to the scientific program. In-kind or financial support of Committee projects is always welcome.
• Submit a formal project/program of work.
• Bring an idea for research topic to HESI by contacting any HESI Staff.
• Collaborate with HESI on bringing career training to your students/institution.
• Identify grant proposals where you and HESI can jointly pursue funding
See our Academic Fact Sheet for more information.
HESI’s scientific programs currently engage scientists from over 150 different universities, research institutes and hospitals, government agencies, foundations, and NGOs across the globe. A current list of public participants is available here.
Committee membership requires relevant technical expertise, active participation on conference calls and meetings, and a commitment to providing ongoing, intellectual input to the scientific program.
Read more about our scientific committees here and contact the staff for those committees directly to learn more.
New participation is coordinated via HESI’s scientific program management staff. Contact information for the relevant staff person for each HESI committee is available via the website or by sending an email to hesi@hesiglobal.org. Please indicate your program of interest, relevant expertise, and contact information.
Many public organizations choose to partner ‘entity-to-entity’ with HESI. For example, HESI and the US FDA entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to define terms for a joint commitment to research towards improved drug development and safety. Other partnership options include, but are not limited to, the following:

Individual scientists who are employed in the private sector are eligible to participate in HESI scientific committee’s and/or its Board of Trustees through HESI’s corporate sponsorship mechanism. In short, the parent company must join HESI as an organizational sponsor, select specific committee activities to support, and then any number of interested scientists from that company may participate in those supported programs.
Current participants, both public and private sector, are available here.
HESI’s annual sponsorship fees are based on sponsors’ worldwide sales (most recently available year-end figures.) The current fee schedule is shown on the sponsorship application. Scientific committee membership fees are set by the committees themselves and are assessed on an annual basis to reflect the scope of work.
HESI sponsorship is open to producers of food, beverages, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, agricultural or other industrial chemicals, paper products, personal care and household products, communications products, transportation products, energy products, or ingredients or containers used in or in connection with these products. Providers of scientific and technical services used in the safety testing or production of these products, or in the assessment of the human health and environmental safety of these products, are also eligible.
A company is ineligible to become a HESI sponsor if that company or a related company engages in the manufacture, production, marketing, sale, or distribution of tobacco products.
HESI scientific committee membership requires relevant expertise, active participation on conference calls and meetings, and a commitment to providing ongoing, intellectual input to the scientific program. Participants must also be employed by a current HESI sponsor company that has paid the annual assessment fees for the relevant committee.
