The mission of the committee is to develop a tiered approach for the ecological risk assessment of substances of Unknown or Variable composition, Complex reaction products or Biological materials (UVCBs) and Multi-Constituents Substances (MCS).

HESI’s UVCB/MCS Committee is currently developing an exposure-based, tiered ecological risk assessment approach for these substances?

Working Groups

  • Manuscript On The Use Of Whole Substance And Representative Constituent Data

    This manuscript was developed based on the outcomes of the workshop held in Iceland in September 2023. The goal of the manuscript is to guide the development of UVCB testing and assessment strategies by properly balancing whole substance and representative constituent data.

  • Tier 0 Database Development

    A sub-group of the committee is working on creating a pilot database of Tier 0 information for 100 UVCBs. The database will consist of publicly available information on substance identification, composition, structure, physico-chemical properties, ecotoxicology, and process data.

    The goal of this database is to make this type of information readily available to risk assessors for initial substance assessment and prioritization.

  • Tier 0 Database Manuscript #1

    This manuscript has been initiated to discuss the challenges of the compilation of UVCB data, including data gaps and data quality issues.

  • Tier 0 Database Manuscript #2

    This manuscript will highlight the advantages a Tier 0 data repository could present to regulators and product registrants.

  • UVCB Complexity Evaluation

    A sub-group worked on the development of a UVCB complexity evaluation scheme that, once finalized, will be published as a short paper, including illustrative examples.
