New HESI Global research is helping advance in vitro methods for identifying seizure risk earlier and more reliably.

In an international, multi-laboratory study, researchers evaluated multielectrode array (MEA) technology using two neuronal cell models:
• Human induced pluripotent stem cell-derived neural co-cultures (with glutamatergic and GABAergic neurons and astrocytes)
• Primary rat cortical neurons

Both models detected seizure-related activity. However, the human-derived model produced more consistent results across laboratories.

These findings support the development of human-relevant approaches that could:
• Strengthen neurotoxicity testing
• Improve drug and chemical safety
• Reduce reliance on animal testing

This collaborative work reflects HESI’s mission to bring scientists together to develop innovative solutions for global health challenges.
