2024 has been an exceptional year for the HESI Immunotoxicology Technical Committee (ITC), marked by an update in leadership, scientific publications, collaborative projects, and exciting events. Let’s take a look at some of the most significant moments from this whirlwind year.
New Leadership and Strategic Planning:
This year saw the election of a new ITC leadership team. Nominations for private sector chair and workgroup (WG) leadership wrapped up in June, and the results were announced in August, setting the stage for a dynamic team to lead the ITC’s future initiatives. A half-day leadership training and strategy meeting is scheduled for mid-October to further align committee goals and plan next steps.
Breakthrough Scientific Publications:
Stay tuned for soon-to-be published manuscripts on our webpage:
Upcoming Events & Workshops:
Education and Outreach Success: The ITC’s Education & Outreach workgroup organized a career symposium in March, providing students and trainees with valuable insights on building careers in immunotoxicology. Panelists from ITC member institutions, including BMS, Rutgers, and the FDA, shared their experiences, helping the next generation of scientists navigate the immune safety field.
Check out the full list of recent ITC events on the ITC webpage here.
Project Update: HESI/AAPS Immunogenicity Collaboration: The ITC and AAPS have made significant strides in their collaboration to standardize in-vitro immunogenicity assays. With Stage I of the UK grant completed, the project is now poised to expand further. Upcoming Outreach from this effort will be presented at the American College of Toxicology (ACT) Annual Meeting (November 2024, Nashville, TN): Session: “Immunogenicity Risk Assessment: Are Preclinical Methods Informative?” chaired by Drs. Kristina Howard (FDA) and Laurent Malherbe (Lilly), focusing on the predictive value of preclinical methods for immunogenicity.
New Scoping Projects: The ITC is excited to begin scoping three new projects!
If you are interested in learning more about these projects or joining the scoping teams, please reach out to ITC managers Shermaine Mitchell-Ryan and Christine Crute.

Michelle Embry, PhD, HESI Deputy Director
Although it is not officially over until September 22nd in the Northern Hemisphere, it is quite apparent from the activity within HESI that summer vacation time is over! The number of presentations and meetings happening this fall are remarkable and HESI will be well-represented around the world, with nearly all of our programs sharing their work.
There is, as always, a lot to talk about, but I wanted to specifically highlight two activities that I think are particularly new and innovative:
I look forward to connecting with many of you at the upcoming meetings this fall!
Best regards,
Michelle Embry, PhD
