Timeline & Success Stories

HESI is committed to excellence. Our scientific committees are responsible for the hard, understated work of experimenting and testing processes and frameworks that allow scientific data to be translated into implementable solutions. HESI’s scientific outputs are utilized by organizations such as OECD, ICH, FDA, EPA, and ECVAM, among others.

Awards and Adoption: HESI’s scientific research is recognized around the globe for its quality, rigor, and relevance to both long-standing and emerging safety assessment needs. We have received awards and recognition for reducing the use of animals in safety testing, enhancing the quality of life for cancer survivors, and improving the accuracy and efficiency of chemical risk assessment. For more than 30 years and with over 20,000 citations worldwide, HESI’s published research and expert networks have been valued technical resources for global standards for drug, chemical, consumer product, and environmental safety and risk assessment methods.

Open Access: HESI believes that access to information is critical to public health. We make all of our publications available via open access to ensure broad public benefit.

Training: HESI conducts hands-on training courses and workshops in chemical, food, and drug safety risk assessment in countries around the world.

Enhancing reproducibility of chemical and drug safety testing: HESI collaborations have made reference cells and test compounds, and their supporting guidance and publications are available to the public and scientific community.

Enhancing patient safety and quality of life: HESI believes that cancer patient quality of life should be an active research priority. HESI THRIVE, a partner in the 2018 Biden Cancer Initiative, provides seed grants for clinical and translational research and technology-based solutions that enhance our ability to predict when and how adverse effects may occur in patients who have received cancer treatment. THRIVE fills a critical gap in funding for foundational research in support of future protective therapies, mitigation strategies, and a next generation of therapy and therapy-support that will enhance the quality of life of cancer patients and survivors.

HESI at 30 Timeline. Over the past 30 years, HESI science has been implemented around the world to improve decision-making, enhance human health and safety, and preserve the environment. Looking forward to the next 30 years, HESI is excited to continue creating a collaborative environment for scientists from academia, government, industry, and NGOs to come together to create science-based solutions for a healthier world.
