Travel Award

What is it?

The HESI’s Future Leaders Travel Award is a competitive award program that provides travel and lodging reimbursement awards to support participation in eligible HESI-sponsored scientific meetings and training activities.

Why support Future Leaders?

By supporting opportunities for direct access to the scientific content and cross-sector thought leadership present at HESI forums, HESI will help foster the next generation of effective and skilled translational scientists.

What does the award provide?

The awards provide reimbursement of eligible travel and lodging expenses up to a cap of $1,500 for travel within a country and $2,500 for international travel.  Under special circumstances these caps may be exceeded with support of the Awards Committee.  Detailed reimbursement guidelines are available on request.

Who is eligible?

This award is open to any scientist (from academe, government, industry, research institutes, NGOs, etc.) with an advanced scientific degree (Masters, PhD, MD or the equivalent).  No prior HESI experience is required, although an interest in continued future interactions with the HESI organization is preferred.  Scientists may only receive the award one time per year, but may under certain circumstances receive awards in consecutive years.   There are no age restrictions on this award.

What events are eligible?

Eligible HESI workshops will be identified on the Upcoming Events page. Please check there for eligible events.

What are my obligations if I do receive an award?

Award recipients are expected to attend and participate in the meeting/event for which they received travel funding.  Following the meeting, awardees will be asked to complete a brief follow-up survey to describe their experience and potential for continued involvement.

What is the timeline for submitting an application for an upcoming event?

The FLT application must be completed and submitted to HESI at least 8 weeks prior to the event for which you are requesting travel support.  The form should be submitted online below along with a CV.

Once I complete the online application, when will I learn the outcome?

Responses to your submissions will be provided within ~2 weeks of your submission.

On what criteria will the applications be judged?

A team of multi-sector scientists will review the applications and consider the following aspects:

  • Overall scientific qualifications of the applicant;
  • Relevance of the applicant’s research/job focus to HESI;
  • Potential for the awardee’s attendance to benefit HESI; and
  • Likelihood of future involvement with HESI.
